ALIGHT
Reimagining Refugee Support Systems
Alight, formerly known as the American Refugee Committee, wanted to reimagine what it means to welcome refugees, migrants and the displaced to the United States.
I led a team to reimagine the welcome experience for newly arrived families in a way that honored their culture, recognized their past, and supported them in building a new future.
In partnership with IDEO.org
Our work started as a support system for Ukrainian refugees, but was designed as a robust system that could accommodate families arriving from any language or nationality.
The Welcome Hub is a one-stop shop that families can use to distill overwhelming data and find relevant resources in their city.

After gathering insights and rapidly prototyping dozens of potential interventions, we delivered a complete package of UI, sitemaps, and design assets based on Alight’s current brand guidelines.
”Mariana uncovered and articulated unique and actionable insights about key customers, and designed thoughtful journeys based on these insights. She collaborated with team members from across the organization and was considered an MVP by our team in terms of being generative, creative, engaging, and delightful to work with.”
